Charlotte Bobcats
About the Charlotte Bobcats
The Charlotte Bobcats are a relatively new team. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the team was established in 2004, two seasons after Charlotte’s previous NBA team, the Hornets, moved to New Orleans. After the Hornets relocated, the NBA promised Charlotte an expansion team, a promise which prompted many groups to start bidding for ownership of the new team. BET founder Robert Johnson was ultimately awarded the franchise. The team went on to recruit a number of great players for its first season, including Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace. Since their first season, the team has continuously impressed fans not only in North Carolina but across the nation. In 2004, a highly anticipated game gave Bobcats fans the opportunity to see the Bobcats beat the New Orleans Hornets 94–93 in overtime in the Hornets’ first trip to Charlotte after they moved from North Carolina to New Orleans.
In 2006, Michael Jordan, a North Carolina native, became the head of basketball operations for the Bobcats. In February of 2010, Johnson announced that he had decided to sell the team to Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player in NBA history. Only time will tell what the future holds for this promising team. Established in 2004, the Bobcats are still a young team. But don’t let the team’s age fool you. A number of Bobcats have already won NBA awards, including a 2005 Rookie of the Year Award and multiple NBA All-Rookie Team selections. With legendary NBA star Michael Jordan as a team official, the Bobcats will very likely rise to become one of the most respected teams in the NBA.
